The April issue of Gramophone is on sale now, in which we celebrate the magazine's 90th anniversary: leading artists of today reflect on what music means to them; editor-in-chief James Jolly discusses the impact of downloading on the 'value' of music; Rob Cowan looks at the musical world in 1923, the year the magazine was founded; features editor James McCarthy traces Gramophone's relationship with new music; and editor Martin Cullingford writes about the pivotal releases of the past nine decades.

Also this issue: Guy Rickards hails Finland's great spectralist, Kaija Saariaho; Joshua Bell conducts the Academy of St Martin in the Fields in Beethoven's Symphony No 4 in our Session Report; Christine Pluhar discusses recording L'Arpeggiata's 'Mediterraneo' in the Musician's Diary; and Lisa Batiashvili talks about tackling Brahms's iconic Violin Concerto in The Musician and the Score.

Plus, the month’s new classical music releases are reviewed by our expert critics – including our Recording of the Month, Schubert's Winterreise performed by bass Matthew Rose and pianist Gary Matthewman, released on Stone Records. Hear an excerpt below:
